CHAPTER 17

I was the last to arrive at Maggie’s the next day for the quilter’s lunch. It would be good to see everyone, but Sandra’s death was certainly having a somber effect on me. The chatter was loud, and already their show and tell had

begun. They all gave me a cheery hello, and some had to give me a hug. I had to admit, once I started munching on some veggies and catching up with each of the girls, I was falling into the practice of where I was before I moved from South Haven. It was nice to know that I still belonged.

When I sat down next to Cornelia to ask her about the shop, she brought up Sandra’s death.

“What do you make of it, Kate?” she asked in a whisper. “I didn’t know her like some of you may have. We were talking about her before you came. It’s such a shame.”

“We didn’t keep in touch since James was being difficult about the Borna property,” I explained. “I did go see her a few days ago, and she did seem pretty depressed. Something went very wrong in that marriage and the aftermath. I suppose a lot of it had to do with James drinking, just like Clay had done, but surely there has to be more to this.”

“It’s just such a shame she didn’t get some help,” Cornelia added. “Many families have some kind of addiction, but to take your life makes me also think there had to be more to the story. By the way, on a more pleasant note, Maggie said your place by the lake is so nice!”

“It will be when it’s all furnished,” I noted. “After this happened with Sandra, I just couldn’t shop.”

She nodded in sympathy.

Maggie got everyone’s attention so they could discuss the Blueberry Festival raffle quilt. They were thrilled when I told them I would try to send a quilt block. Emily then showed a quilt she had just finished. She always wowed the group at each meeting with her talents. It was a hand appliquéd sampler quilt of different lighthouses. How perfect for South Haven. I wondered if Jack would like something with lighthouses on it. I should think more seriously about his request for a quilt.

There were many questions about my new house in Borna. I told them about Ruth Ann and how I commissioned a guest signature quilt from her to put in my entryway. They all thought it was quite clever. I told them that next week I was expecting a group of quilters that would be staying at the guest house. I said they should all consider such a trip in the future. It did spark some conversation about the idea.

“So what do you do for fun in such a little town?” Emily asked as she folded her quilt.

“Well, my first social experience was to go to a winery which my next door neighbor owns,” I described. “I also joined a small group we call the Friendship Circle.
